Maxillary Central Incisor is the upper front tooth in the oral cavity that is important for function and
aesthetic. Objective of this study is to examine the prevalence, aetiologies and time taken for eruption
of impacted maxillary central incisors at Klinik Pergigian Pakar Ortodontik Mentakab from year 2011 to
year 2023.Specifically, this study will examine the prevalence of impacted maxillary central incisors, the
demographic characteristics of patients referred with impacted maxillary central incisors, the aetiologies
and level of impaction of maxillary central incisors and the effect of level of impaction on the time taken for
eruption. This study will be carried out as a retrospective study that will be based on records of patients that
were referred due to impaction of maxillary central incisors. All patients within age range 7 - 18 yrs old that
was diagnosed with impaction of maxillary central incisors based on Royal College of Surgeon Guideline
and have complete clinical and radiographic records of impacted maxillary central incisors are included in
this study. Patients with missing maxillary central incisors and patients with craniofacial malformations will
be excluded from this study. Data will be analysed by per protocol analysis using statistical program IBM
SPSS version 26. A one-way-repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearsson Correlation will
be performed. Impaction of maxillary central incisors can negatively affect a patient’s daily activities and
psychological wellbeing. We hope to improve the predictability of our treatment based on the findings.

Keywords: Nifedipine, calcium channel blocker, inhalation sedation, special need patients

Background: Inhalation sedation is a safe and effective sedation technique, used as a pharmacological
behavioral management for dental patients at chairside. Calcium channel blocker lowers increased
peripheral resistance and consequently the blood pressure. In this case series, we discuss about a gentleman
in his twenties who was referred to us due to dental anxiety for surgical extraction of wisdom teeth and a
regular attendee in his thirties with hypertension and history of acute lymphoblastic leukemia that was
       planned for tooth extraction.
Aim: In this case series, we are sharing the management of these patient using inhalation sedation and
nifedipine to manage patient high blood pressure during dental treatment.
Methodology: As part of the behavior management technique in these cases, inhalation sedation was
administered using titrated nitrous oxide in oxygen by the SCD specialist and patient’s vital signs were
recorded. Due to history of patient high blood pressure during previous dental visits, 5mg Nifedipine STAT
was prescribed and taken by patients 30 minutes before procedure.
Results: Patients blood pressure fall to normal range and dental procedures were carried out uneventfully.
Postop, patients were well, showed no signs and symptoms, vitals were acceptable.
