Prof Richard Widmer

Dr Richard Widmer received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Melbourne and his Master’s Degree in Paediatric Dentistry also from the University of
Melbourne.
In 1981, Dr Richard Widmer completed his Specialist Fellowship in the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS). In 1983, he was appointed Head of
Department and worked at the Westmead Hospital Dental Clinical School (WHDCS); now the Westmead Centre for Oral Health (WCOH) from 1980 up until 2000.
He was appointed as the Associate Clinical Professor of Paediatric Dentistry, Sydney University in the mid 90’s. He had worked full time throughout since graduating in
1975 and perform all aspects of paediatric dentistry in his working life.
In the year 2000, Professor Richard Widmer became the Head of Department at the newly opened Children’s Hospital at Westmead, where he still employed as a full
time Staff Specialist and Head of Department as well as an Associate Clinical Professor in Paediatric Dentistry, University of Sydney. He co-owned a private specialist
paediatric dental practice, Dental Paediatrix (DPX), in Sydney from 2005 to 2018.
He is a very active clinician and lecturer, in all Health Sciences as well as presenting at Conferences, both locally and internationally. A past President of the
International Association of Paediatric Dentistry (IAPD), the Australasian Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the Australian and New Zealand Society of
Paediatric Dentistry (ANZSPD). In 2008, Professor Richard Widmer received The Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons’ Meritorious Service Award for my
contributions to Paediatric Dentistry.
He has co-edited both the very popular "Handbook of Paediatric Dentistry" now in its fifth edition (in six languages) and the booklet "Paediatric Dentistry, Dental Care
for Children. A Guide for Parents".

Caries inactive, Comfortable and Confident: Dental experience for all children special and not so special.
Creating a positive dental experience for each child’s dental interaction is so important for their long-term health behaviours, not just dental but all health behaviours.
There are some fundamental approaches to help clinicians to achieve the sort of outcomes that make a difference to each child’s immediate and long-term care.
