Introduction: Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the supporting structures of the teeth which
include gums and bone. Based on recent National Oral Health Survey for Adult 2020, over 94.5% of Malaysian
adults are having unhealthy gums. Unhealthy gums could affect a person’s quality of life, masticatory
function, and cause tooth loss. Multiple factors could contribute to the occurrence of periodontal disease.
Objectives: The objective of this study is to determine the association between periodontal disease and its
       risk factors among Tawau population.
Methodology: A retrospective study reviewing exiting clinical records and referral letters received by Unit
Pakar Periodontik Tawau. Referral letter dated from year 2013 to 2023 where demographic details, health
status, smoking history, BPE Score and diagnosis of periodontal disease of patient were collected. Clinical
records such as employment status and marital status will be included in data collection. Patient referred
from primer, specialist, medical and private clinic were included in this study. Disposed and incomplete
clinical records will be excluded. Data were analysis using SPSS version 26 with p value <0.05 as significant.
Results: A total of 367 referrals received by Unit Pakar Periodontik Tawau over period of 10 years. Significant
differences were recorded between periodontal disease with age, marital status, socioeconomic status, and
medication intake with p value <0.05. Socioeconomic status and medical history are positively correlated
       with periodontal disease.
Conclusion: Routine dental checkup at primary clinic or community setting aid in prevention and early
intervention of periodontal disease. Oral health promotion should be encouraged to spread awareness of
periodontal disease in every community. Early intervention and treatment of periodontal disease improves
patient’s quality of life and prevent early tooth loss.
