Lecture : Impact of COVID-19 on Patients with Endocrine
Disorders
In late 2019 and early 2020, the world saw the emergence of a novel coronavirus infection,
dubbed the COVID19, and healthcare resources in most countries rapidly became
overwhelmed dealing with this infection. It was soon discovered that people with diabetes
are especially at risk of a more severe infection and death from COVID19.
In this lecture, we will review the impact of COVID19 infection, as well as the impacts of
lockdowns, COVID19 treatment, and COVID19 vaccinations on people with diabetes and
other endocrine disorders.
Importantly, COVID19 also exposed social inequalities and the weaknesses in many healthcare
systems, thus providing golden opportunities for us to improve our healthcare delivery. In the
post- COVID19 era, the world is moving into a new way of delivering healthcare, and in this
lecture, we will also review the roles of teleconsultation and remote monitoring especially
in diabetes care, and future ways to empower the healthcare system to withstand future
natural or man-made catastrophes.
