                                Lecture: Pandemic and the Dentist
The unprecedented pandemic of COVID-19 struck more than 3 years ago, resulting in a lot of
confusion to healthcare providers and the general population. The dentists were not spared
as they work at one of the possible entrances of SARS-Cov-2. Double face mask and face
shield were a must. Many healthcare workers treating patients with COVID-19 were infected
before vaccination saves the day. However, cross infection to the dentists in general is low.
This lecture provides an update on SARS-Cov-2, its impact to the dental profession and ends
with a glimpse of the future

                                Prof. Dr. Imran Zainal Abidin

Professor Imran is currently the Professor of Medicine and Senior Consultant Cardiology at
Universiti Malaya. Upon completion of his MBBS with the ‘Best Medical Student Award’ from

Lecture: COVID-19 and the Heart: Facts vs Myths
It is generally acknowledged that SARs-Cov-2 affects the lungs of most patients. Other
organs of concern is the cardiovascular system. Cardiac injury may develop in patients
with or without an existing cardiovascular disease. They need close monitoring, even after
discharge, as the ongoing systemic inflammation may lead to ventricular dysfunction and
malignant arrhythmia. There are increased risks of incident cardiovascular disease, such as
cerebrovascular disorders (stroke/transient ischaemic attacks), dysrhythmia (atrial fibrillation/
sinus tachycardia), ischaemic heart disease (acute coronary disease/myocardial infarction/
angina), thromboembolic disease (pulmonary embolism/deep vein thrombosis). In children,
Kawasaki-like manifestations have been reported. This lecture provides an update on the
facts and myths on the effect of COVID-19 on the heart, heart failure, pericarditis, myocarditis,
                                cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock.
