Dental Phobia: Nobody Loves Going To The Dentist
Nearly 30% of world population have different degree of dental phobia including children
and adult. Fear and anxiety toward the dentist and dental treatment are both significant
characteristics that contribute to avoidance of dental care. Literature revealed that
patients with dental phobia have higher prevalence to develop oral diseases including
dental caries and periodontal problems. Understanding and assessing levels of dental
phobia is important for delivering successful dental care. Several assessment tools are
available to investigate the levels of dental phobia, thus allowing clinicians to determine
the appropriate treatment modalities for the patients. However, non-pharmacological
behaviour management and pharmacological intervention have their own merits and
limitations. This lecture will discuss on:
1. Overview and prevalence of dental phobia among adult patient
2. Factors contributing to dental phobia
3. Implication of dental phobia to oral health
4. Management of patient with dental phobia in a clinical setting
