Lecture:
Tooth Whitening: Tips and Tricks
Patients with discoloured teeth may suffer from low self-esteem which might affect their
work and social activities. Tooth discolouration ranges from mild to severe depending
on the cause. Extrinsic stain caused by food, beverages, poor oral health and smoking
may be removed using prophylaxis. However intrinsic staining caused by ageing, mild
fluorosis and tetracycline may be bleached either with home bleaching or professionally
in the dental clinic. Resin infiltration may also be used to manage fluorosis. Localised
hypoplasia may be treated with microabrasion and macroabrasion techniques. More
severe tetracycline stained teeth may require bleaching, followed by more complex
treatment such as veneers and crowns. In this lecture, a series of cases ranging from
mild to severe tooth discolouration with suitable management will be presented.
